Old, cracked or fogged panes do not have to mean new windows. Window glass replacement puts fresh glass into the frames you already have. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not supply or fit glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare quotes before you choose. Say what glass is there now and what is wrong with it, and glaziers will tell you what they would fit.

Glass options for your windows

The right glass depends on the room, the position and the frame. Common choices are:

  • Clear float glass: the standard choice, typically 4 to 6 mm in house windows.
  • Toughened glass: for large panes and low-level or door-side windows, where safety glass is required.
  • Laminated glass: holds together when broken, a good choice for security and hail.
  • Obscure or frosted glass: for bathrooms and privacy.
  • Double glazing or Low-E: for heat, cold and noise.

Frames and fitting

Glaziers replace glass in aluminium, steel and wooden frames. Aluminium window glass replacement is usually quick, as the glass sits in a bead or rubber gasket. Older steel windows often use putty, and wooden frames may need repairs first.

If the frame is bent, rusted or rotten, new glass will not last. Ask the glazier to check the frame, seals and fixings when they measure. Brand new frames may suit the job better, and a good glazier will tell you honestly.

Measuring and safety

Measure the visible glass, then ask the glazier to confirm on site. Give the width, height and thickness if you can, and photograph the frame.

Tempered glass cannot be cut after toughening, so it is made to exact measurements and can take longer to arrive. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening, as SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137 cover windows near doors, at low level and of larger size. Large sun-facing panes can crack from thermal stress, so mention the orientation.

What affects your quote

People often search for the price of window glass or window glass cost, but it depends on the job, so we never show prices here. Glaziers look at:

  • The glass type, thickness and finish.
  • The size of each pane and how many there are.
  • Whether the glass must be toughened or laminated.
  • Frame condition and the beads, seals or putty needed.
  • Height, access and travel distance.

Clear photos and measurements get you quotes that are easy to compare. Mention the direction each window faces and whether any glass is near a door or the floor.

Comparing quotes for window glass replacement

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Photograph each window and its frame.
  • Measure the glass width and height.
  • Say what glass thickness is there now.
  • Note any panes near doors or the floor.
  • List how many panes you need replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za replace window glass?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers near you, who quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
Can I replace just the glass and keep the frame?
Often yes, if the frame is sound. The glazier will check it when measuring and tell you if the frame also needs work.
How long does a replacement pane take?
Plain glass can be quick. Toughened or laminated panes are made to measure and may take longer. Ask each supplier for their lead time.
Should I upgrade to safety glass?
Maybe. Windows near doors or close to the floor often need it. Ask your glazier what the regulations require for your opening.
