Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Glass pool fencing keeps children and pets away from the water and leaves the view of the pool and garden open. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and pool fence installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or install fences ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare quotes before you choose.

Types of glass pool fence

There are three common ways to hold the glass.

  • Frameless on spigots: round stainless steel spigots are fixed into the paving or deck, and the glass is clamped with no posts. This is the most popular frameless glass pool fence.
  • Channel-fixed: the glass sits in a base channel set into the slab. It is very neat, but the channel must be planned during construction.
  • Semi-frameless: glass panels between slim posts, which suits uneven ground and tighter budgets.

Most pool fences use 10 to 12 mm toughened glass, clear or with a light tint.

Pool safety and the gate

The fence is a life-safety item. Municipal by-laws, your insurer and the pool safety rules that apply to your property may set the fence height, gap sizes and gate details. Ask your glazier to confirm what is required for your pool.

  • Use a gate that closes and latches by itself, with self-closing hinges, and that opens away from the pool.
  • Keep the gaps under panels and gates small enough that a small child cannot crawl through.
  • Make sure the latch is out of reach of children.

Site and fitting notes

Spigots need holes drilled into pavers or a solid base. Ask the installer to check that the paving is thick enough and not simply laid on sand. Glass panels are made to size after measuring, and cannot be trimmed on site, so slopes, steps and paving gaps must be measured carefully.

Pool chemicals, wet conditions and, near the coast, salt air are hard on fittings. Ask for 316 stainless steel, and plan to rinse the glass and fittings regularly.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Installers will usually look at:

  • The total length of fencing and the number of corners.
  • Glass thickness, finish and tint.
  • The fixing type: spigot, channel or post.
  • The number and type of gates.
  • Ground conditions, paving type and how far the installer must travel.

A simple sketch with measurements will get you better quotes.

Comparing quotes for glass pool fencing

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Give the total fence length and the number of corners.
  • Say how many gates you need and where.
  • Describe the surface: pavers, concrete or decking.
  • Mention any slope, steps or walls on the line.
  • Say if the pool is new or existing, and when you need it done.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za install glass pool fences?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or fit fences, and there is no obligation.
How thick should glass pool fencing be?
Typically 10 to 12 mm toughened glass. The right thickness depends on the height, spigot spacing and wind exposure, so ask your glazier to confirm it for your pool.
Does a glass pool fence need a gate?
Yes, there must be a way in. A glass gate should be self-closing and self-latching, on suitable hinges. Ask the installer how they will meet local pool safety requirements.
Can the glass be fitted on a paved pool surround?
Usually, if the paving is on a solid base. Spigots are fixed into holes cored through the paving. Tell the installer how the paving was laid.
