A glass roof brings daylight into a patio, walkway, entrance or room while keeping out the weather. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, make or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare quotes for a glass canopy, pergola roof or skylight before you decide.

Types of glass roof and canopy

Overhead glazing covers several jobs.

  • Glass canopy over a front door: a small cantilevered or rod-supported pane for shelter.
  • Glass roof over a pergola or patio: panels on steel, aluminium or timber beams.
  • Skylights and roof lights: openings in a conventional roof to bring in light.
  • Walkway and carport canopies: larger spans, often at shops and offices.

Panels are typically 8 to 12 mm, in clear, tinted or low-iron glass.

Glass type: laminated or toughened

Overhead glass can fall on people, so the glass type matters. Laminated glass for overhead glazing holds together on its interlayer if broken, which is why it is widely used for roofs. Laminated toughened panels add strength. Toughened-only glass breaks into small cubes that can fall.

Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your roof, based on SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137, and whether an engineer should check the structure and loads. Highveld hail and heavy rain are real considerations in many areas.

Heat, light and fitting notes

A glass roof lets in sun and heat. Ask about solar control or Low-E coatings, tint or a fritted pattern if the area faces north or west. Large sun-facing panes can also suffer thermal stress breakage, so edge quality and glass type matter.

  • The roof needs a fall so that water runs off, with sealed joints and gutters.
  • Panels are made to size, so the supporting frame must be accurate.
  • Check body corporate or council approval, especially for work that changes the roofline.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Installers will usually look at:

  • The area, span and shape of the roof or canopy.
  • Glass type, thickness, tint and coatings.
  • The supporting frame: new, existing or supplied by the installer.
  • Height, access and whether lifting equipment is needed.
  • Waterproofing, gutters and travel distance.

Photos and a simple sketch help installers quote accurately.

Comparing quotes for glass roofs and canopies

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Give the size and shape of the roof or canopy.
  • Say what the glass will sit on: steel, aluminium or timber.
  • Mention which direction the area faces.
  • Note any hail, wind or coastal exposure.
  • Attach photos and say when you need it done.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za install glass roofs?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or fit glass, and there is no obligation.
Is tempered glass used for roofs?
Tempered glass roof panels are used, but overhead glazing is usually laminated, or laminated toughened. Laminated glass stays together if broken. Ask your installer what they recommend.
Will a glass roof make the area too hot?
It can. Solar control glass, Low-E coatings, tint or shading all help. Tell the installer which way the roof faces so they can advise.
Does a glass canopy need approval?
Sometimes. Councils, estates and body corporates may have rules. Ask your glazier or an engineer to confirm what applies to your property.
