Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Need glaziers for a broken pane, a new shower door or glass for a whole house? TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and glass suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not cut, toughen or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare quotes from more than one glass company before you decide who does the work. Tell us the town, the glass and the problem, and local glass companies will do the rest.

What glaziers do

A glazier measures, orders, fits and seals glass. Some run a workshop and cut glass themselves. Others order toughened or laminated panes from a city processor and fit them on site. Both are normal.

  • Repairs: broken windows, cracked panes, blown double-glazed units and emergency board-up.
  • Replacement: new glass in aluminium, steel or wooden frames.
  • New work: shower doors, balustrades, shopfronts, partitions and mirrors.
  • Finishes: window film, frosted glass and security glazing.

Safety glass and the regulations

SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137 set where safety glass is required. This includes doors, side panels next to doors, low-level glazing, shower enclosures, balustrades and large panes. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

Safety glass carries a permanent etched safety mark showing the type and standard, such as SANS 1263. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every measurement must be exact before it is ordered. Laminated glass holds together on its interlayer when broken, which also helps with security.

Choosing between glaziers

Glass work is only as good as the fitting, so compare more than the quote itself.

  • Ask whether the company fits the glass itself or sub-contracts the work.
  • Check the glass type, thickness and edge finish named in each quote.
  • Ask about lead time if the glass must be toughened at a processor.
  • Ask about after-hours call-outs if the job is urgent.
  • Ask the supplier about guarantees and what they cover. We cannot promise any.

In an estate or sectional-title complex, check the body corporate rules before you book.

What affects your quote

Glaziers cannot quote well from a vague request, and we never show prices here. They will look at:

  • The type of glass, its thickness and the number of panes.
  • Pane size, and whether it needs a crane or extra hands.
  • Frame type and condition, and whether old glass must be removed.
  • Height, access and travel distance to your site.
  • Urgency, such as a same-day call-out.
  • Supply only, or supply and installation.

Photos and measurements help you get quotes you can compare. If you are not sure what you need, describe the problem and let the glaziers suggest options.

Comparing quotes for glaziers

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Say what the job is and where.
  • Send photos of the glass and frame.
  • Give measurements if you have them.
  • Mention if the job is urgent.
  • Note any estate or body corporate rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za install glass?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers near you, who quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
How do I find glaziers near me?
Fill in the form with your town, the job and the size of the glass. Glaziers in your area then contact you with quotes.
Can a glazier cut tempered glass on site?
No. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled once toughened. Glaziers cut plain glass first, or order tempered panes made to your exact measurements.
Do I need to be home for a quote?
Often photos and measurements are enough. Some jobs need a site visit, and the glazier will tell you when they do.
