Window film changes how glass looks and behaves without replacing it. Frosted glass window film adds privacy to bathrooms, offices and glass doors, while other films cut heat, glare and UV or hold broken glass together. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or fit film ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare more than one installer.
Types of window film
Different films do different jobs. Pick the one that matches the problem you want to solve.
- Frosted or privacy film: a white, etched look for bathrooms, doors and meeting rooms.
- Solar control and tint: reduces heat, glare and fading from strong sun.
- Safety and security film: holds shards together if glass breaks.
- Decorative and manifestation film: patterns and bands that make glass walls and doors visible.
Where film works well
Film is popular on bathroom windows, glass front doors, shower-side panes, office partitions and shopfronts. West-facing rooms with strong afternoon sun benefit from solar film. Offices often use frosted bands at eye level on glass walls.
Safety film helps hold glass together, but it does not turn ordinary glass into certified safety glass. Where the regulations call for safety glass, such as doors and low-level panes, ask your glazier to confirm what is required for your opening. Laminated glass or film can also be an extra layer of security beside burglar bars.
Fitting and care
Installers clean the glass, apply the film wet and squeeze out the water. New film can look hazy for a few days while it cures.
- Ask the installer whether the film suits your glass. Dark or heat-absorbing film on large sun-facing, Low-E or double-glazed panes can cause thermal stress.
- Ask the supplier about guarantees and what they cover.
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap, not abrasive pads.
- Film is fitted inside the glass in most homes, so removal is possible later.
What affects your quote
We never show prices. The installer will look at:
- The film type, such as frosted, solar, safety or decorative.
- The total glass area and how many panes there are.
- Pane size, shape and the number of cuts and fit-ups.
- Glass type and condition, and whether the glass suits the film.
- Height, access and travel distance to your site.
A photo of each window, the sizes and the reason you want film will help you get quotes you can compare.
Comparing quotes for window film
The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:
- Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
- Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
- Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
- Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.
What to include in your request
- Say what you want film to do.
- Measure each pane's width and height.
- Mention if the glass is double glazed or Low-E.
- Photograph the windows from inside.
- Note the direction the glass faces.
