Frosted glass lets light in but blocks the view, which makes it a popular choice for bathrooms, front doors and offices. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or fit glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare frosted, etched and sandblasted glass from more than one supplier before you decide on a finish.

Types of frosted glass

Frosting changes the surface of the glass so that it scatters light. Each method gives a different look and feel.

  • Acid-etched glass: an even, smooth satin finish that is easy to clean.
  • Sandblasted glass: a textured matt surface, which can also be done as a pattern or border.
  • Frosted film: a thin film on the glass, a lower-cost way to add privacy.

Frosted glass can also be toughened or laminated for safety. Back-painted white or tinted glass is a different product and is not see-through at all.

Where frosted glass is used

Frosted glass suits bathroom windows, shower doors, front door side panels, internal doors, office partitions and boardroom walls. It gives privacy glass without losing daylight, which also helps during load shedding. It is a good fit for older homes with overlooked windows, and for modern offices that want privacy between rooms.

In showers and doors, frosted panels should be safety glass. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening. In a shower, the frosted face is usually fitted away from the water, so ask which side to use.

Buying and fitting notes

Frosted surfaces can mark with oil or soap, so ask about cleaning and any protective treatment. Etching or sandblasting is done before toughening, so exact sizes must be settled first. If you only want a quick privacy fix on existing glass, window film is another option to ask about.

  • Decide the level of privacy: light, medium or fully opaque.
  • Check the thickness: 6 to 10 mm is typical for doors and showers.
  • Plan for a body corporate: some complexes need approval for external changes.
  • Think about light: a frosted pane still passes most daylight, so rooms stay bright.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Suppliers prefer to quote for your actual job. They will look at:

  • The method: etched, sandblasted or film.
  • The size, thickness and number of panes.
  • Plain finish or a custom pattern.
  • Toughened or laminated glass.
  • Delivery distance and fitting.

Large or heavily patterned panes take more work to make. Clear measurements and a photo of the opening help suppliers quote accurately.

Comparing frosted glass quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • State the size and number of panes.
  • Say where the glass will be used.
  • Choose etched, sandblasted or film.
  • Mention any pattern, border or logo-free design.
  • Include a photo of the opening.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell frosted glass?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent suppliers near you, and they quote you directly. No fee, no obligation.
What is the difference between etched and sandblasted glass?
Acid-etched glass has a smooth, even satin finish. Sandblasted glass has a rougher matt texture and can carry patterns.
Can frosted glass be used for shower doors?
Yes, if it is safety glass. Ask your glazier which face of the glass should go on the wet side.
Is frosted glass fully private?
Mostly, but it depends on the finish and the light. At night, shapes can show against a bright room, so ask for a denser finish.
