Sliding glass doors are a common way to link a lounge, bedroom or dining room with a patio or garden. One or two panels run on rollers in a track, so the door needs no swing space. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, make or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.

Types of sliding glass doors

Most sliding glass doors are aluminium frames holding toughened panes, with one panel that slides and one that stays fixed. They suit repair and replacement work as well as new openings.

  • Two-panel doors: the usual patio door, which opens about half the width.
  • Three or four-panel doors: wider openings with panels on two or more tracks.
  • Frameless sliding doors: toughened glass hung from a top track.

If you want most of the wall to open, ask about stacking doors or folding glass doors instead.

Where they are used and what to consider

Sliding glass doors for patios are common in family homes, flats, offices and guest houses. They save space and let in light.

  • Safety glass: doors need safety glass under SANS 10400-N, so ask your glazier to confirm what applies to your opening.
  • Security: ask about secure locks, anti-lift devices, laminated glass and a security gate.
  • Heat and noise: double glazing or Low-E glass helps on sunny walls and on cold Highveld mornings.

Rollers, repairs and replacement

Most problems are not the glass. A door that sticks or jumps is often caused by worn rollers, a bent or dirty track, or a loose lock. Sliding glass doors rollers can be replaced, and a glazier can usually say after a quick look whether repair is enough.

If a pane is cracked or the frame is worn, a replacement may be better. Measure the existing glass or send photos, and note its thickness. A new toughened pane is made to size, so allow time for processing. Check the safety mark on the new glass.

What affects your quote

Sliding glass doors in South Africa vary widely in size and finish, so we never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:

  • The opening size and number of panels.
  • Frame colour and the condition of the existing frame and track.
  • Glass type, thickness, tint, laminating or double glazing.
  • Rollers, locks, handles and any security gate.
  • Whether it is repair, replacement or a new opening, and travel distance.

Comparing quotes for sliding glass doors

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Give the width and height of the opening or pane.
  • Say whether it is a repair, replacement or new door.
  • Describe the problem and attach a photo.
  • Note the frame colour and any security gate.
  • Say when you need it and where you are.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell or install sliding glass doors?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers near you, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
Can sliding door rollers be replaced?
Often, yes. Rollers wear out and can be swapped without changing the glass. Send the door brand details and a photo of the roller if you can.

Usually, if the frame is sound. A glazier will measure the pane and order a toughened replacement to fit.
How do I make a sliding door more secure?
Ask about better locks, an anti-lift device, laminated glass and security gates. Combine these with sensible habits at night.
