A cracked window, a smashed door pane or glass broken in a break-in is rarely planned. Glass repairs are often urgent. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not repair glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation. Say clearly if the job is urgent, so glaziers who take emergency call-outs can respond. You can then compare quotes for the repair, the replacement glass and any temporary board-up.

Common glass repairs

Cracked glass cannot normally be mended. In most cases the pane is replaced, and the glazier repairs the frame, seals or fittings around it.

  • Cracked or broken windows: new glass cut to fit the frame.
  • Shattered tempered glass: it breaks into small cubes and must be replaced.
  • Fogged double glazing: a failed seal means the sealed unit is replaced.
  • Scratches and chips: sometimes polished out on small marks, otherwise replaced.
  • Hardware: hinges, locks, rollers and handles on glass doors.

Emergency repairs and board-up

If glass breaks after hours or during a break-in, safety and security come first. Keep children and pets away, wear shoes, and do not pick up large shards with bare hands. Take photos for your insurer before anything is moved. Then tape or cover the opening if it is safe to do so.

Many glaziers offer emergency glass repairs with a temporary board-up, which secures the opening until new glass is ready. Ask each supplier about after-hours and 24/7 availability. We cannot promise response times for any glazier.

What caused the break

Knowing the cause helps you choose the right replacement.

  • Thermal stress: large sun-facing panes can crack from the edge when part of the glass is hot and part is shaded.
  • Impact: hail, a stone or a ball. Laminated glass stays in the frame after impact.
  • Forced entry: consider laminated glass or security film instead of relying only on burglar bars.
  • Frame movement: a warped frame can crack new glass again.

Doors and low-level panes often need safety glass. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

What affects your quote

We never show prices. Glass repairs depend on the job, and a glazier will look at:

  • The glass type and thickness, and whether it must be toughened.
  • The size of the pane and how many are broken.
  • Frame condition and any hardware to replace.
  • Access, height and distance from the glazier.
  • Whether you need an after-hours call-out or temporary board-up.

Photos of the break and rough measurements make quotes faster and easier to compare.

Comparing quotes for glass repairs

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Photograph the break from both sides.
  • Say when and how the glass broke.
  • Note if the opening is unsecured.
  • Measure the pane or the frame opening.
  • Say if you need an after-hours visit.
