Whether it is a shower, a balustrade, a door or a table top, tempered glass is the usual choice when strength and safety matter. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers, glaziers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, cut, toughen or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare tempered glass suppliers before you decide.
What tempered glass is and how it works
Tempered glass is ordinary float glass that has been heated to around 620 °C and then cooled very quickly. This leaves the outer surfaces in compression and the core in tension. The result is glass about four to five times stronger than ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness.
If it does break, it fails into small, blunt cubes instead of long, sharp shards. That is why it counts as a safety glass. Tempered glass is also more resistant to heat, so it copes better with sun, hot water and cold nights.
Toughened glass is the same product under another name. Local suppliers use both terms.
Where tempered glass is used
Safety glass is required in many places in a building. SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137 cover doors, side panels next to doors, low-level glazing, bath and shower enclosures, balustrades and large panes. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.
- Bathrooms: showers and bath screens, usually 8 to 10 mm.
- Balustrades and pool fences: usually 12 mm, or laminated toughened.
- Doors and partitions: frameless doors are typically 10 to 12 mm.
- Furniture and fittings: table tops, shelves and splashbacks.
Buying notes: sizes, edges and the safety mark
Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked after toughening. Every hole, notch and cut-out is done first, and your measurements must be exact. A wrong size means a new pane, so many glaziers measure on site.
- Safety mark: look for the permanent etched stamp showing the type and standard (SANS 1263).
- Edges: arrised, flat polished or bevelled finishes are common.
- Colour: clear glass has a green tint. Low-iron glass is clearer.
- Lead time: smaller towns often wait for panes from a city processor.
For large panes in direct sun, ask about heat-soak testing and thermal stress.
What affects your quote
People often search for the tempered glass price or the cost per square metre, but it depends on the job. We never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:
- The thickness, size and number of panes.
- Clear, low-iron, tinted or back-painted glass.
- Holes, notches, edge finish and any fittings.
- Heat-soak testing, if the pane needs it.
- Delivery distance and whether you want supply only or supply and installation.
Clear details give you quotes you can compare properly.
Comparing tempered glass quotes
Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
- Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
- Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
- VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.
What to include in your request
- Give the exact size of each pane in millimetres.
- State the thickness you want, or what the pane is for.
- List any holes, notches or hinge cut-outs.
- Name the edge finish and glass colour you prefer.
- Mention your town and whether you need installation.
