Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Custom tempered glass cut to size is made to your exact measurements, with the holes, notches and edge finish you ask for. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers, processors and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not cut, toughen or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare custom tempered glass panels, edge finishes and lead times from more than one supplier before you decide.

How cut to size tempered glass is made

Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked after toughening. The panel is cut from ordinary float glass first, then holes, notches and edges are finished, and only then is it heated and cooled quickly to toughen it. Any change after that means a new panel.

  • Measure exactly: a few millimetres out can make a panel useless.
  • Plan every hole: give sizes and positions from the edges.
  • Expect a lead time: panels are made to order.

Cutting is done on a flat table with a scoring wheel or a computer-controlled cutter. Holes are drilled with diamond bits, and corners can be left square or rounded.

Sizes, thickness and edges

Typical thicknesses are 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm. Table tops often use 8 to 12 mm, shelves 6 to 10 mm and frameless doors 10 to 12 mm. Your glazier can advise on what suits the load and the opening.

  • Arrised edge: a light seam, the standard finish.
  • Flat polished edge: smooth and clear, for exposed edges.
  • Pencil polished edge: a rounded finish.

Low-iron glass has less green tint if you want a clearer look. Larger panes are heavier, so ask how they will be carried to site.

Buying notes and safety

Cut-to-size panels are used for tops, shelves, doors, screens, balustrades and splashbacks. Where glass is used in doors, low-level glazing, showers or balustrades, safety glass may be required. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening. Check that each panel carries a permanent safety mark, and that hardware, handling and transport are planned before delivery.

Custom panels are rarely returnable, so confirm measurements in writing. Many glaziers will come and measure for you, which removes the risk of a costly mistake.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Suppliers prefer to quote for your actual panels. They will look at:

  • The size, thickness and number of panels.
  • Edge finish, holes, notches and cut-outs.
  • Clear, low-iron or tinted glass.
  • Delivery distance and handling of large panes.
  • Whether you want supply only or supply and install.

Clear measurements and a simple sketch help you get quotes you can compare properly.

Comparing tempered glass cut to size quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • Give exact width and height in millimetres.
  • State the thickness you want, or the use.
  • List hole and notch sizes and positions.
  • Choose an edge finish for each side.
  • Say where the panels must be delivered.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell tempered glass cut to size?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent suppliers near you, and they quote you directly. No fee, no obligation.
Can tempered glass be cut after it is toughened?
No. Cutting, drilling or edge work must be finished first. A panel that is cut afterwards will usually shatter, so measure carefully.
What do I need to give the supplier?
Send exact sizes, thickness, edge finish, hole positions and how the glass will be used. A sketch helps.
How long does a custom panel take?
It depends on the supplier and their workload. Ask each supplier about lead time and delivery when you compare quotes.
