Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Finding reliable glass suppliers can take a lot of phone calls. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers, merchants, processors and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, cut, toughen or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare toughened glass suppliers, merchants and processors side by side before you decide who to use for your project.

Types of glass suppliers

Not every supplier does every job. Knowing the difference saves time.

  • Glass merchants: sell float glass, mirrors and standard sizes, often cut to order.
  • Glass processors: cut, polish, drill and toughen glass, and make laminated and double glazed units.
  • Glaziers: measure, order and fit glass at your property.

Many suppliers cover a single metro or region, so the best match is often close to you. Smaller towns often rely on a glazier who orders toughened panes from a processor in a bigger city. Expect a lead time for those orders.

What suppliers can offer

Depending on the supplier, you can ask about clear, tinted, low-iron and frosted glass, tempered glass wholesale orders for trade buyers, laminated glass, mirrors, double glazed units and custom cut panels. Tempered glass cannot be cut after toughening, so a supplier needs exact sizes before processing. Many will also help with advice on thickness and edge finish if you describe the job. Larger orders may be quoted per project.

For doors, showers, balustrades and large panes, safety glass may be required. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

Choosing between quotes

Compare the same job across suppliers, not just the bottom line. Make sure each quote covers the same glass, sizes, finish and delivery. Ask each supplier about:

  • Safety marks: the permanent stamp on safety glass.
  • Lead time: how long made-to-order panels take.
  • Delivery: who offloads and who is responsible for breakage in transit.
  • Fitting: supply only, or supply and install.
  • Samples: for tints and low-iron glass, ask to see a sample.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Suppliers prefer to quote for your actual order. They will look at:

  • The type, thickness and number of panes.
  • Cutting, drilling, edge work and toughening.
  • Standard sizes or custom panels.
  • Delivery distance and how the glass is offloaded.
  • Whether you want supply only or supply and install.

Account customers and bulk orders may be handled differently, so say if you are a builder or contractor. A clear list of sizes and uses helps suppliers reply faster.

Comparing glass suppliers quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • List the type, thickness and size of each pane.
  • Say if the glass must be toughened or laminated.
  • Mention holes, notches and edge finish.
  • State your delivery address or collection plan.
  • Say if you want supply only or fitting too.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell glass?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent suppliers near you, and they quote you directly. No fee, no obligation.
Can I buy glass directly from a supplier?
Often yes. Many suppliers sell to the public as well as to trade. Ask if they cut and deliver for homeowners.
Do suppliers toughen glass themselves?
Only processors with a toughening furnace do. Others order from a processor, which can add lead time.
Can I use one supplier for glass and fitting?
Some do both. Others only supply, so tick supply only or supply and install on your request.
