When glass must stay in place after it breaks, laminated glass is the answer. It suits windows, glass roofs, shopfronts and anywhere security or noise matters. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, and you can compare laminated glass quotes before you decide.

How laminated glass is made

Laminated glass has two or more layers of glass bonded to a tough interlayer under heat and pressure. The common interlayers are PVB and the stiffer SGP. If the glass cracks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer. The pane stays in its frame and keeps people and weather out.

  • Laminated annealed: float glass layers, good for security and sound.
  • Laminated toughened: toughened layers for extra strength, used in balustrades and overhead glazing.

Thicker interlayers or more layers give more resistance.

Where laminated glass is used

Laminated glass is chosen for security, safety and comfort, and it often works better than relying on burglar bars alone.

  • Security: ground-floor windows and doors. A thief needs time and noise to get through.
  • Overhead glazing: canopies, skylights and glass roofs, where falling pieces are a risk.
  • Balustrades and pool fences: often laminated toughened, typically 12 mm or thicker.
  • Noise and UV: acoustic laminated glass cuts traffic noise, and the interlayer blocks most UV.

Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

Laminated versus tempered glass

The two are often compared, and they do different jobs. Tempered glass is strong and breaks into small cubes. Laminated glass breaks, but stays together. Tempered glass cannot be cut after toughening, and laminated toughened panes are made to exact size too. Ask the supplier what can still be altered on your build.

Many jobs use both. A laminated toughened pane gives strength and keeps the pieces in place if it breaks. Edges of laminated glass should be sealed or protected, since moisture can damage the interlayer.

What affects your quote

Searches for laminated glass prices in South Africa rarely help, because each build is different. We never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:

  • The layer thicknesses and interlayer type.
  • Whether the glass is annealed or toughened.
  • Pane size and number of panes.
  • Tints, acoustic or solar-control options.
  • Delivery, lead time and whether you want fitting.

Tell the supplier your goal, such as security or noise, so they can recommend a build.

Comparing laminated glass quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • Say what the glass must do, such as security or noise.
  • Give pane sizes in millimetres.
  • State if you want laminated annealed or laminated toughened.
  • Mention the frame type and the opening position.
  • Say whether you need installation as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell laminated glass?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent suppliers and glaziers near you. They contact you directly with a quote. We do not sell or install glass, and there is no obligation.
Is laminated glass better than tempered glass?
Neither is better in every case. Tempered glass is stronger and breaks into small cubes. Laminated glass stays together when broken, so it suits security and overhead glazing. Many balustrades use laminated toughened glass, which combines both. Ask your glazier which suits your opening.
Can laminated glass be used for windows?
Yes. Laminated glass is a popular choice for ground-floor windows and doors because it resists forced entry and holds together when broken. It also reduces noise and blocks most UV. It can be fitted in aluminium and steel frames, with the right glazing method.
Does laminated glass stop break-ins?
It slows them down. Thieves can crack the glass, but the interlayer holds it in the frame, so they need more time and make more noise. Frames, locks and fixings matter as well. Ask the supplier about options for your security needs.
