Frameless doors give a clean, open look with no frame around the leaf. Frameless glass doors are made from toughened glass, usually 10 or 12 mm thick, and hung on patch fittings, pivots or hinges. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and glass suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, make or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare quotes from more than one supplier.

Types of frameless glass doors

A frameless door is a single leaf of toughened glass with no frame around the edge. These are the common styles.

  • Hinged doors: swing on top and bottom patch fittings or on side hinges fixed to a wall or glass panel.
  • Pivot glass doors: turn on a pivot set in the floor and the header, which suits wide, heavy leaves.
  • Sliding frameless doors: hang from a top track and slide past a fixed panel.

The glass can be clear, low-iron, frosted or tinted. Edges are normally polished.

Where they are used and what to consider

Frameless glass doors suit entrances, patios, bathrooms, home offices, boardrooms and shop entrances. A tempered glass door passes light through and keeps sightlines open.

Safety rules apply. SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137 set where safety glass is required, and doors are one of those places. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

Typical thickness is 10 or 12 mm, and taller or wider leaves usually need the thicker pane. Check that every pane carries the permanent safety mark etched in a corner.

Hardware, measuring and installation

Hinges for glass doors are not the same as timber door hinges. Fittings clamp to the glass through cut-outs or clamp plates. Near the coast, ask about 316 stainless steel, which resists salt air.

  • Locks: floor locks, strike plates and glass-to-glass locks.
  • Handles: pull handles, ladder pulls or recessed finger pulls.
  • Closers: floor springs or overhead closers for busy doors.

Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening. All holes and notches are done first, so measurements must be exact. Most glaziers measure on site.

What affects your quote

Many people search for the glass doors price, but a fair figure depends on your opening. We never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:

  • The size, thickness and number of leaves.
  • The glass type, such as clear, low-iron, frosted or laminated.
  • Hardware such as hinges, pivots, locks and handles.
  • Edge finish, cut-outs and any side panels or fixed fanlights.
  • Supply only or supply and installation, plus travel distance.

Clear details give you quotes you can compare.

Comparing quotes for frameless glass doors

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Give the opening width and height in millimetres.
  • Say whether you want hinged, pivot or sliding.
  • State the glass type and any frosting you prefer.
  • Note if the door is inside, outside or near the coast.
  • Say when you need it and whether you want installation.
