Windows and doors made of glass and aluminium are the most common choice in South African homes, offices and shops. Aluminium frames are slim, light and do not rot, and the glass can be clear, tinted, laminated or double glazed. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and aluminium installers near you, who quote directly. We do not sell or fit anything ourselves. No fee, no obligation.

Types of glass and aluminium windows and doors

Aluminium and glass doors and windows come in a wide range of styles.

  • Top-hung and side-hung windows: open outwards on friction stays or hinges.
  • Sliding windows: two or more panes running in a track.
  • Fixed panes: glass in a frame that does not open, for light and views.
  • Aluminium doors: hinged, sliding or stacking doors with glass panels.

Frames are usually powder-coated or anodised, in white, bronze, charcoal and other colours.

Glass choices and what to consider

Aluminium window glass is commonly 4 to 6 mm for standard windows, with thicker panes for large openings. Safety glass is required in doors, low windows and large panes, so ask your glazier to confirm what SANS 10400-N requires for each opening.

  • Tinted or Low-E: reduces glare and heat on sunny walls.
  • Obscure glass: for bathrooms and privacy.
  • Laminated: for security, hail and noise.
  • Double glazing: for warmth and comfort in cold areas.

Replacement, repairs and installation

Many jobs are replacements. If the frame is sound, a glazier can often replace only the glass in the existing frame. Old steel or wooden windows can be replaced with aluminium to reduce draughts and rust. Measure carefully and note the frame type, as poor fit lets in water and wind.

Near the sea, ask about marine-grade powder coating or anodising, and stainless steel fittings. On the Highveld, ask about hail-resistant glass. Burglar bars are usually fitted separately from the window. Body corporates may control frame colour on flats.

What affects your quote

Whether you search for glass and aluminium near me or in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria or Durban, every job is different. We never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:

  • The number, size and style of windows or doors.
  • Frame finish and colour.
  • Glass type and thickness, including laminated or double glazing.
  • Whether it is new, replacement or glass only.
  • Installation, plastering or making good, and travel distance.

Comparing quotes for glass and aluminium windows

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • List the number of windows and doors with sizes.
  • Say whether it is new, replacement or glass only.
  • State the frame colour and the glass type you want.
  • Attach photos of the existing frames.
  • Mention coastal exposure, hail or security needs.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell or install glass and aluminium windows?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers near you, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
Can I replace just the glass in my aluminium window?
Often, yes. If the frame is straight and sealed, only the pane is replaced. Give the pane size and thickness, or send photos.
Do aluminium windows need safety glass?
In some places. Doors, low windows and large panes need it under the regulations, so ask your glazier to confirm each opening.
Which frame finish lasts longest near the sea?
Marine-grade powder coating or anodising, with stainless fittings, resists salt air best. Ask the supplier what they use.
