A shower screen keeps water off the floor without the cost of a full enclosure. They suit baths with a shower over them and open walk-in showers. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or install screens ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare shower screens for sale from more than one supplier.

Bath screens and walk-in panels

A shower screen is a glass panel or two that stops spray. It is different from a shower door, which closes an enclosure. The two main kinds are:

  • Shower screens for baths: a fixed panel, sometimes with a hinged or folding section, fitted along the bath edge.
  • Walk-in shower screens: a fixed glass wall with no door, fitted next to a tiled shower area.

A fixed glass panel is the simplest option. It has no moving parts, so there is little to wear out.

Glass, thickness and fixing

Screens must be safety glass, and the regulations cover shower and bath enclosures. Ask your glazier to confirm what applies to your opening. Typical thicknesses are 6 mm for small bath screens and 8 to 10 mm for walk-in panels.

A fixed panel is held by wall channels, clamps or a floor channel. Choose stainless steel fittings, with 316 grade near the sea. Your wall needs to be sound, because tiles on a weak wall will not hold a heavy panel.

Body corporate rules may apply in a sectional-title flat, so check before you order.

Sizing and buying tips

Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening. Hole positions and edges are finished first, so a supplier needs accurate sizes. Baths are rarely perfectly level, and old walls lean.

  • Measure the bath length and the wall height you want covered.
  • For a walk-in screen, decide how wide the shower area should be.
  • Choose clear, frosted or low-iron glass for a whiter look.
  • Ask about seals to keep water inside.

A bath screen is a neat upgrade for a family bathroom where a curtain keeps getting mouldy. Clear glass lets light through, so a small bathroom does not feel closed in.

What affects your quote

We never give prices, because screen jobs vary a lot. A supplier will look at:

  • The size of the panel and whether it is fixed or hinged.
  • The glass thickness and finish.
  • The fittings, such as clamps, channels and a support bar.
  • Whether you want supply only or fitting too.
  • Delivery distance and toughening lead time.

Photos of the bath or shower area help suppliers quote accurately.

Comparing shower screens quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • Measure the bath length and wall height.
  • Say if you want a bath screen or a walk-in panel.
  • State the wall type: tiled, plaster or brick.
  • Choose clear or frosted glass.
  • Add your town and a photo of the bath.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell shower screens?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent suppliers and glaziers, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
What is the difference between a shower screen and a shower door?
A screen is a fixed or partly hinged panel. A door closes a full enclosure and swings or slides.
Does a walk-in screen keep water in?
Mostly, if the panel is wide enough and the floor slopes to the drain. Ask your glazier to advise.
Can a screen be fitted over an existing bath?
Yes. A glazier measures the bath and wall, then orders the glass cut to size before fitting.
