Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Offices, clinics, schools, malls and factories all rely on glass to bring in light and shape the way a building looks. Commercial glazing covers everything from shopfronts and entrances to full glass facades. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glazing contractors and glass suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not supply or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.

Types of commercial glazing

The right system depends on the building, its height and how it is used.

  • Curtain wall glazing: an aluminium frame fixed to the building's structure, holding glass units across one or more floors. Common on office buildings.
  • Structural glazing: glass bonded to the frame with structural silicone, so the outside shows only clean glass and thin joints.
  • Window walls and storefronts: glazing within each floor, often used on lower buildings.
  • Entrances and atria: glass doors, canopies and roofs.

Performance: heat, light and safety

Large glass facades take a lot of sun. On the Highveld, hail and thunderstorms are a risk. At the coast, wind and salt air are the concerns. Glass type helps with all of these.

  • Double glazing and Low-E glass reduce heat gain and cut air-conditioning load.
  • Solar control coatings reduce glare and fading.
  • Toughened glass resists thermal stress on large sun-facing panes. Heat-soak testing reduces the rare risk of spontaneous breakage.
  • Laminated glass adds security and holds together if broken.

Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for each opening, and look for the safety mark.

Working with a glazing contractor

Commercial glazing is project work. Most contractors want drawings, a schedule and a clear scope before they quote.

  • Share architectural drawings or at least dimensions and floor levels.
  • Say who is responsible for scaffolding, hoists and cranes.
  • Ask about site safety, insurance and previous projects.
  • Order early, because large processed panes have a lead time.

For a repair or a small job, photos and measurements are usually enough.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. Contractors will look at:

  • The glazed area, pane sizes and building height.
  • The system: curtain wall, structural or storefront.
  • Glass specification: toughened, laminated, double glazed or coated.
  • Access equipment, site conditions and safety needs.
  • The programme and how much work is done after hours.

Comparing quotes for commercial glazing

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Share drawings or measurements and floor levels.
  • Say which system you have in mind.
  • State the glass type and performance needed.
  • Mention access, scaffolding and working hours.
  • Give your project timeline and site address.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za do commercial glazing?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent glazing contractors and suppliers near you. They contact you directly with a quote. We do not sell, make or install glass, and there is no obligation.
What is the difference between curtain wall and structural glazing?
Curtain wall glazing holds glass in an aluminium frame fixed to the building. Structural glazing bonds the glass to the frame with silicone, so less of the frame shows from outside. Your contractor can explain which suits the design and the wind loads.
Does a glass facade need double glazing?
Often, yes. Insulated glass units with Low-E coatings reduce heat gain and loss, which helps comfort and air-conditioning costs. Ask suppliers about the glass specification for each side of the building, because sun exposure differs.
Can I get quotes for a small commercial job?
Yes. Repairs, extra windows, entrance doors and single panes are all common. Send photos, measurements and your location. Some contractors prefer larger projects, so we pass your request to those who do the type of work you need.
