Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Looking for glass cutting near me for a window pane, a mirror or a table top? TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent glaziers and glass processors in your area, who quote you directly. We do not cut or toughen glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare custom glass cutting from more than one supplier. Give us your sizes and the glass you need, and suppliers will quote you directly.

What can be cut

Glass is cut by scoring the surface and snapping it along the line. Ordinary annealed (float) glass, mirror, patterned glass and laminated glass can all be cut to size, usually in a workshop.

Tempered glass is different. It cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once toughened. The glass is cut, edged and drilled first, then sent for toughening. This is why exact measurements matter.

Shapes, holes and edges

Straight cuts are simple. Curves, notches, holes and cut-outs need more work, and water jet or CNC cutting is used on plain glass for complex shapes before toughening.

  • Edge finishes: arrised (seamed), flat polished, bevelled or pencil polished.
  • Holes and notches: for hinges, handles, taps and brackets.
  • Typical jobs: window panes, cupboard doors, shelves, table tops, picture frames and mirrors.

Typical thicknesses run from 4 mm for pictures and small panes to 6 to 12 mm for shelves and table tops.

Measuring for a cut

Measure the opening in three places and use the smallest figure. Give width first, then height, and say which way up the glass goes if it has a pattern.

  • Send a paper or cardboard template for curves or odd shapes.
  • Say where holes sit, measured from two edges.
  • State the thickness and edge finish you want.
  • Ask the supplier what tolerance they work to.

Safety glass may be needed for doors, low-level panes and wet areas. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening.

What affects your quote

We never show prices. Glass cutting is quoted per job, and the supplier will look at:

  • The glass type and thickness.
  • The size and number of pieces.
  • Straight cuts or shapes, and the number of holes.
  • The edge finish and any toughening afterwards.
  • Collection or delivery, and how far your site is.

A list of sizes and a simple sketch make a quote quick to prepare. If you will collect the glass yourself, say so, as handling large sheets needs care.

Comparing quotes for glass cutting

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • List width, height and thickness of each piece.
  • Say which edge finish you want.
  • Give hole positions from two edges.
  • Send a template for curves.
  • Say if you will collect or need delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za cut glass?
No. We are a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers and processors who quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
Can tempered glass be cut to size?
Not after toughening. Plain glass is cut and edged to your sizes first, then toughened. Check measurements carefully before you order.
Can a glazier cut a mirror?
Yes. Mirror is cut like plain glass, and edges can be polished or bevelled. Ask the supplier about size limits and finishes.
Do I need to supply a template?
For straight cuts, a list of sizes is enough. For curves, notches or odd shapes, a cardboard template avoids mistakes.
