Know the sizes? List each pane in millimetres. Toughened glass can't be cut afterwards, so sizes help the glazier quote, but they will still measure up before ordering.

Planning a new bathroom or updating an old one? Frameless shower doors give a clean, open look and are easy to wipe down. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and glass suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, make or install glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare shower glass doors from more than one glazier before you decide.

Types of frameless shower doors

A frameless shower door is made from thick tempered glass with no metal frame around the edges. The glass is held by hinges, clamps or a track. Most glaziers offer a few layouts.

  • Hinged door: swings out from a fixed side panel or wall.
  • Pivot door: turns on top and bottom pins, good for narrow spaces.
  • Sliding door: frameless shower doors sliding on a top track suit tight bathrooms where a swing is not possible.
  • Corner enclosure: two doors or a door and a return panel.

Safety, thickness and hardware

Shower glass must be safety glass. SANS 10400-N and SANS 10137 cover where it is needed, so ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require for your opening. Look for the etched safety mark on the finished pane.

Typical thicknesses are 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm. Thicker glass feels more solid and suits larger doors. Hinges, handles and clamps should be stainless steel, and 316 grade is worth asking about near the coast, where salt air corrodes cheaper fittings.

Measuring and fitting

Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked after toughening. Every hole and notch is made first, so the glazier must measure exact sizes on site, often after the tiling is done. Walls that are not plumb are common, so allow for this.

A good glazier will also check that the door closes cleanly against the wall or panel and that the hinges are set square. Ask what the supplier does if the glass arrives slightly out of size.

  • Choose clear, low-iron or frosted glass.
  • Ask about a watertight seal and a door sweep at the bottom edge.
  • Check that the tiled floor falls towards the drain.

Searches for frameless shower doors in Cape Town or glass doors for a bathroom elsewhere all lead to the same process: measure, order, toughen, fit.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here, because every bathroom is different. The glazier will look at:

  • The size and layout of the shower and number of glass panels.
  • The glass thickness, tint and any frosting or low-iron option.
  • The type and finish of hinges, handles and seals.
  • Whether you need removal of an old screen.
  • Travel distance, and the lead time for toughening.

Clear measurements and a photo help you get quotes you can compare properly.

Comparing quotes for frameless shower doors

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • State the width and height of the opening.
  • Say whether tiling is complete.
  • Choose a door style: hinged, pivot or sliding.
  • Mention if you want frosted or low-iron glass.
  • Add a photo of the shower and your town.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za install frameless shower doors?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent glaziers near you, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
Are frameless shower doors safe?
Yes, when made from tempered safety glass. If it breaks, it crumbles into small blunt pieces. Check for the safety mark.
How thick should the glass be?
Typically 8 to 10 mm for standard doors, and 12 mm for large or heavy ones. Your glazier will advise.
Can I fit a frameless door to an existing shower?
Often yes. The glazier measures the opening, then orders glass cut to size. Allow time for toughening before fitting.
