A glass table top can replace a damaged top, finish a new base or protect a wooden desk. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or cut glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare round, rectangular and custom tops from more than one supplier before you order.

Shapes and types of table tops

Glass tops are cut to any shape before toughening. The most common are:

  • Round tops: for dining, bistro and patio tables.
  • Rectangular and square tops: for dining tables, desks and buffets.
  • Coffee table and side tables: a tempered glass side table or tempered glass top for a coffee table, often with rounded corners.
  • Outdoor table glass: toughened glass for patio and braai areas.
  • Desk glass tops: a clear top over wood to protect it.

Thickness, edges and safety

Typical thicknesses are 8 to 12 mm. Small side tables use 8 mm, dining tables usually 10 or 12 mm. A larger span or a base with few supports needs thicker glass.

Always choose tempered glass for a table top. It is much stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. Edges can be arrised, flat polished or bevelled. Low-iron glass has less green tint, which suits white bases.

Measuring and fitting notes

Tempered glass cannot be cut or worked after toughening, so the exact size and shape must be right the first time. Use a template for unusual shapes.

  • Measure the base, not only the old top.
  • Allow a sensible overhang, which your supplier can advise on.
  • Ask for clear rubber or silicone pads to stop slipping.
  • Check the base can carry the weight of the glass.

Outdoor tables in wind should be secured, or choose a heavier top. Highveld thunderstorms and coastal gusts can lift a loose top, so ask the supplier about pads, clips or a recessed base. Keep a protective layer between the glass and any hard metal base to prevent chips along the edge.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. A supplier will look at:

  • The shape, size and thickness of the glass.
  • The edge finish and any cut-outs, such as an umbrella hole.
  • Clear, low-iron or tinted glass.
  • Whether you need delivery or collection.
  • The lead time for toughening and your distance.

A sketch with measurements and a photo of the base helps suppliers quote properly.

Comparing glass table tops quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • Give the shape and exact dimensions.
  • Measure the base as well as the old top.
  • State the glass thickness you prefer.
  • Mention any hole or cut-out needed.
  • Say if the table is indoors or outdoors.
