Glass shelves are light, easy to clean and suit bathrooms, kitchens, display cabinets and shops. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glass suppliers and glaziers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or cut glass ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare bathroom glass shelves, floating glass shelves and cabinet shelves from more than one supplier before you order.

Types of glass shelves

Shelves are cut to size from tempered or annealed glass, with edges finished smooth. The right type depends on where the shelf goes and how much weight it will carry.

  • Bathroom glass shelves: small shelves above basins, baths and toilets.
  • Shower glass shelves: shelves fixed inside a shower for shampoo and soap.
  • Floating glass shelves: glass held by concealed or very slim supports.
  • Display cabinet shelves: loose shelves that sit on pins inside a cabinet.

Thickness, edges and brackets

Typical thicknesses are 6 to 10 mm. A thin 6 mm shelf suits light items in a cabinet, while 8 to 10 mm suits wall shelves. Tempered glass is stronger and, if it breaks, crumbles into small pieces, which is safer at head height.

Edges are arrised (seamed), flat polished or bevelled. Stainless steel brackets suit wet areas, and 316 grade is better near the coast. A shelf bracket for glass shelves should hold the glass firmly, with soft pads to protect it.

Buying and fixing notes

Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening. Notches and holes for pins and brackets are made first, so give exact sizes.

  • Decide the weight each shelf will carry.
  • Check that the wall is solid and use the right plugs for tile or brick.
  • In a shower, choose fixings meant for wet areas.
  • For cabinets, measure the inside width, depth and pin hole spacing.

Never fix a shelf on a thin partition without checking what is behind it. Pipes and wiring often run in bathroom walls, so mark them first. Keep shelves clear of the shower spray where you can, and wipe them dry to avoid water marks.

What affects your quote

We never give prices here. A supplier will look at:

  • The size and number of shelves.
  • The glass thickness, tint and whether it is tempered.
  • The edge finish and any notches or holes.
  • The type of brackets or supports.
  • Delivery or fitting, and your distance from the supplier.

List each shelf with its length and depth so suppliers can quote accurately.

Comparing glass shelves quotes

Glass is made to order once it is toughened, so the details matter. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact glass: the type, thickness, colour (clear, low-iron, tinted or frosted) and edge finish, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Processing: holes, cut-outs, notches and polishing included, all done before toughening.
  • Lead time and delivery: how long processing takes, delivery or collection, and how the panes are packed.
  • VAT and changes: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and what happens if a size is wrong.

What to include in your request

  • List the length and depth of each shelf.
  • Say where the shelf will be fitted.
  • Mention the weight it should carry.
  • State the wall type or cabinet pin size.
  • Choose the edge finish and your town.
