Stacking doors are a row of glass panels that slide along a track and gather together at one side, or split and stack at both ends. They open most of a wall to your patio or garden. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent glaziers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell, make or install doors ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation.

Types of stacking doors

Unlike an ordinary sliding door, where one panel passes over another and half the opening stays closed, stacking panels move to the side and clear most of the opening.

  • Aluminium stacking doors: framed panels, top-hung or running on bottom rollers.
  • Frameless stacking doors: 10 or 12 mm toughened panels with polished edges, joined by gaskets and held in a slim top and bottom track.

Most sets have three to eight panels. You can stack left, right or to both sides, and one panel often has a hinged pass door.

Where they are used and what to consider

Stacking doors suit entertainment areas, braai rooms, restaurants, guest lodges and lounges that open to a garden. They work best where you want a full-width opening in good weather.

  • Stack bay: the panels need clear wall space to rest in when open.
  • Weather: ask about seals, track drainage and wind rating, especially at the coast and on the Highveld.
  • Security: ask about multi-point locks and laminated panes.

Doors need safety glass under SANS 10400-N. Ask your glazier to confirm what the regulations require.

Buying and installation notes

A top-hung system carries the weight of every panel from above, so the lintel or steel header must be strong and level. Ask who is responsible for checking it. A bottom track can be recessed so that the floor stays flush, which avoids a trip edge.

Because tempered glass cannot be cut after toughening, the panels are made to measurements taken on site. Allow time for processing and delivery, as supply in smaller towns often depends on a city processor. Body corporates may need to approve changes to an outside wall.

What affects your quote

People often search for stacking doors price, but every opening is different. We never give prices here. Suppliers will look at:

  • The total width and height, and the number of panels.
  • Aluminium or frameless, and the glass thickness and type.
  • Frame colour, track type and flush floor recess.
  • Locks, handles, seals and any pass door.
  • Delivery, installation and travel distance.

Send a photo of the opening and a rough sketch to help suppliers quote.

Comparing quotes for glass stacking doors

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Glass: the type, thickness and finish allowed for, and that it carries the safety mark where it must.
  • Hardware: the hinges, clamps, channels, spigots or frames included, and their finish and grade.
  • Measuring and lead time: who measures, how long the toughened glass takes to arrive, and when it can be fitted.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages, removal of old glass and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Give the opening width and height in millimetres.
  • Say how many panels and which side they should stack.
  • State aluminium or frameless, and the frame colour.
  • Attach a photo of the opening and the stack bay.
  • Mention coastal exposure, wind and security needs.

Frequently asked questions

Does TemperedGlass.co.za sell or install stacking doors?
No. TemperedGlass.co.za is a free quote service. We pass your request to independent suppliers and installers near you, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation.
What is the difference between stacking and sliding doors?
Sliding doors have a few panels that pass over each other, so part of the opening stays closed. Stacking panels gather to the side and open most of the wall.
Are frameless stacking doors safe?
They use toughened glass, which breaks into small blunt pieces. Ask about laminated panes and good locks if security is a concern.
How much wall space do stacked panels need?
Each panel adds a little depth to the stack, so allow clear wall for the whole bundle. Your installer can work this out on site.
