Glass and glazing in Upington
Upington lies on the Orange River in the Green Kalahari, where vineyards, date palms and desert heat meet. Plastered homes with stoeps, courtyards and pools use glass for sliding doors and pool-facing windows, and river lodges and guest houses add large glass frontages. Summer temperatures often pass 40 degrees, so sun-facing panes heat up, thermal stress breakage is a real risk for large annealed glass, and solar control glass and film help keep rooms cool. Hard water leaves scale on shower glass. Local glaziers handle repairs, and toughened panes come mostly from Cape Town or Gauteng processors, a long haul that adds to the lead time.
Typical glass shelves requests in the area come from:
- Family homes: clear glass shelves above the basin and bath in a family bathroom
- Farms, lodges and guest houses: glass shelves in guest bathrooms and display cabinets at a lodge or farm stall
- Shops, restaurants and malls: tempered display shelves inside shop cabinets, showrooms and jewellery counters
- Offices, clinics and schools: glass shelves in a reception display unit or clinic cabinet
- Security and golf estates: floating glass shelves with slim supports in the dressing room of an estate home
- New builds and developments: glass shelves in shower niches and bathrooms fitted after tiling in a new house
